Facing Corfu across a narrow strait, Saranda is the sun-soaked gateway to the Albanian Riviera, a stretch of Ionian coast where the water glows an improbable turquoise. Around the beach town of Ksamil, tiny islands sit just offshore in water clear enough to snorkel, while ancient Butrint slumbers in its forest a short drive south.
Add a hilltop castle at sunset, a freshwater spring the colour of sapphire and some of the cheapest seafood in the Mediterranean, and you have Europe's best-value beach escape.
Settle into Saranda, wander the seafront promenade and swim off the town beach. In the afternoon drive inland to the Blue Eye, a seemingly bottomless spring bubbling up in impossible shades of blue, then head up to Lëkurësi Castle for sunset over the bay.
Spend the morning hopping between Ksamil's tiny offshore islands, swimming and snorkelling in the clearest water. In the afternoon explore the ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO-listed city layered with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian remains, wrapped in birdsong and forest.
Either catch the fast ferry across to the Greek island of Corfu for a day of old-town lanes and beaches, or drive up the coast to Himarë and the hidden canyon beach of Gjipe. Finish with grilled seafood and a glass of raki back on the Saranda front.
A cluster of four tiny islets sitting just off Ksamil's beaches in water so clear you can wade or swim out to them. Rent a pedalo or kayak, or simply float across to a near-empty rock and dive straight into the turquoise.

A fast passenger boat crosses the strait to the Greek island of Corfu in as little as half an hour. It makes an easy day trip from Saranda — bring your passport, as it's an international border.
A wild pebble cove where a dramatic canyon meets the Ionian, reached by boat or a scenic 20-minute walk down from the trailhead. There's little more than a summer beach bar, which is exactly the point.
The Riviera's beach-holiday heart, a village fringed by white-sand coves and three little islands you can swim or wade out to. Come early in the day in summer, as the coves fill fast and boats jostle for the clearest water.

Up the coast toward the Llogara pass, a string of quieter pebble bays and the hidden canyon beach of Gjipe. Base yourself in laid-back Himarë for crystal water, olive groves and a slower, more Greek-flavoured rhythm.
A flaky filo pastry layered with cheese, spinach or minced meat, sold hot from bakeries all along the coast. It's the cheapest, most satisfying breakfast or beach snack you'll find.
Albania's national dish: lamb baked under a tangy blanket of yoghurt and egg until set like a savoury custard. Rich, comforting and worth ordering at a traditional taverna inland.

The clear grape spirit poured to welcome guests and close a meal, often homemade and startlingly strong. Sip it slowly with meze — refusing a top-up is nearly impossible.
Late spring (May–June) and September are ideal: hot, swimmable seas without the July–August crush of Albanian and Kosovar holidaymakers. Peak summer is lively but Ksamil's coves get packed, while winter is mild but quiet, with many beach businesses closed.
Saranda is walkable, and frequent minibuses (furgon) run to Ksamil and Butrint through the day. A rental car or scooter unlocks the wider Riviera toward Himarë and Gjipe, and the passenger ferry to Corfu takes about 30–90 minutes depending on the boat.
