Jeju City & the west coast
Start at Dongmun Market in Jeju City, then drive down the west coast to Hallim Park and turquoise Hyeopjae Beach. Watch the sunset from the hamlet of Geumneung before a black-pork barbecue dinner.
Off Korea's southern coast, Jeju is a subtropical volcanic island built around the dormant giant of Hallasan and studded with lava tubes, crater cones and black basalt walls. It's a land of stone, wind and sea, where citrus groves quilt the slopes and women divers comb the shallows for abalone.
The north around Jeju City is busy and modern, while the calmer south near Seogwipo draws you in with waterfalls, cliffs and tangerine fields. Hike a volcanic cone at sunrise, cycle past black-sand coves and end the day over sizzling black pork — Jeju moves to its own unhurried rhythm.

Day 2
Sunrise Peak & the east
Climb Seongsan Ilchulbong for sunrise before the crowds, then explore the Manjanggul lava tube and watch haenyeo dive at Hado. Take the ferry to tiny Udo island for cycling and black-sand beaches.
Day 3
Seogwipo, waterfalls & Hallasan
Spend the morning in Seogwipo at Cheonjiyeon waterfall and the hexagonal basalt columns of Jusangjeolli. In the afternoon, hike an oreum cone, or — with a reservation — attempt a climb on Hallasan.

Seongsan Ilchulbong
A 180-metre tuff cone born from an undersea eruption 5,000 years ago, its green crater rising like a crown from the sea. Climb the steps before dawn to watch the sun break over the island's eastern cape — hence its name, Sunrise Peak.

Hallasan
At 1,947 metres, this dormant shield volcano is South Korea's highest mountain and the island's beating heart, crowned by the Baengnokdam crater lake. The Seongpanak trail reaches the summit, but the final stretch requires a free advance reservation.

A UNESCO-listed lava tunnel carved by flowing magma hundreds of thousands of years ago, ending at one of the world's tallest lava columns. About a kilometre is open to walk — bring a jacket, as it stays cool and damp inside.

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
A 22-metre cascade in Seogwipo whose name means 'where sky and earth meet', tumbling into a deep pool fringed by subtropical forest. A short lantern-lit path leads there, making it worth a visit after dark too.

Haenyeo women divers
Jeju's legendary sea women free-dive up to ten metres without oxygen to harvest abalone, sea urchin and shellfish — a UNESCO-honoured tradition kept alive by grandmothers. Watch them surface near Hado or Seongsan, or visit the Haenyeo Museum to grasp their story.

Hyeopjae Beach
A strip of fine white shell-sand and shallow turquoise water on the west coast, with the volcanic islet of Biyangdo on the horizon. Perfect for wading and sunsets; the shady palm and bonsai gardens of Hallim Park sit right next door.
Neighbourhoods
Jeju City
The island's urban gateway in the north, where most flights land and ferries dock. A base for night markets, Dongmun Market and easy access to the lava tubes and west-coast beaches.
Seogwipo
The mellower town on the south coast, ringed by waterfalls, basalt cliffs and tangerine groves. Ideal for coastal walks, boat trips and the island's mildest, most subtropical weather.
Seongsan
The eastern corner, crowned by the crater peak of Seongsan Ilchulbong and with the ferry to Udo just offshore. Best for sunrises, haenyeo shows and quiet rural views.
Hallasan area
The forested green heart of the island around the highland volcano, laced with hiking trails and scenic roads. Choose it for mountain air, summit hikes and silent oreum hills.
Where to eat
Black pork barbecue
Jeju's native black pigs, grilled as heuk-dwaeji, give unusually tender, rich meat you wrap in lettuce with salted anchovy paste. The barbecue houses of Jeju City's Black Pork Street are the classic place to try it.
Abalone rice porridge
Jeonbok-juk, a silky rice porridge studded with fresh haenyeo-dived abalone and tinted green by the shellfish's insides. A hearty, gentle breakfast served in Seogwipo and coastal villages.
Hallabong citrus
A sweet, seedless tangerine with a distinctive bump at the stem, named after Mount Hallasan and harvested in winter. Eat it fresh, or as juice, chocolate and cake in the island's cafés.
Omegi-tteok
A chewy rice cake made from millet and wrapped in red bean paste, a traditional Jeju snack from an era when little rice grew here. Pick it up at markets with a cup of roasted-grain tea.

Best time to visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: mild, clear and carpeted with yellow canola blooms or autumn foliage. Summer is hot, humid and prone to typhoons and monsoon rain, while winter turns cool, with snow on Hallasan and Hallabong harvest season.
Getting around
A rental car is by far the easiest way to reach Jeju's beaches, volcanic cones and waterfalls, as sights are spread far apart. Intercity buses link Jeju City, Seogwipo and coastal towns, and many walkers tackle sections of the Olle trail that loops the island on foot.
