Athens wears its 2,500 years lightly: the Acropolis presides over a sea of rooftops while, below, cafés, street art and souvlaki counters keep modern life humming. From the marble temples it's a few minutes' walk to the tangled lanes of Plaka or the rooftop bars of Monastiraki.
This is a city for wandering and lingering, compact enough to conquer on foot and open toward the sea. In the afternoon the limestone glows amber, at night people dine under the open sky, and the floodlit Acropolis is never out of view.
Start at the Acropolis the moment it opens, taking in the Parthenon, Erechtheion and Theatre of Dionysus, then cross to the Acropolis Museum opposite. Lunch in a Plaka taverna, then ride up Mount Lycabettus for sunset.
Spend the morning in the Ancient Agora with its intact Temple of Hephaestus, then browse the Monastiraki flea market and wander whitewashed Anafiotika. In the evening head to Psyrri and dine on a rooftop watching the Acropolis glow.

The sweet spots are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when temperatures sit around 15-25°C and are perfect for sightseeing and open-air dining. Midsummer is fierce, with July often topping 35°C and no shade on the rock at midday. Winter is mild and cheapest for accommodation, ideal for budget travellers.
The centre is compact and most sights are walkable, while three metro lines link the airport, the port of Piraeus and the main squares. Taxis are plentiful and run 24/7, many via ride-hailing apps. For Cape Sounion, take a KTEL coach or join a tour timed for sunset.
