Mykonos

Mykonos is the Cyclades at full volume — a compact, sun-bleached island where cubist white houses tumble down to a turquoise sea and bougainvillea spills over every corner. By day it's beaches and boat trips; by night the alleys of Chora fill with cocktails, music and a glamorous crowd that keeps going until sunrise.

Beneath the party reputation is a genuinely beautiful island: 16th-century windmills, a labyrinthine old town built to confuse pirates, and the sacred ruins of Delos a short hop across the water. Come for the scene, stay for the light.

Itinerary

Day 1

Chora & sunset in Little Venice

Lose yourself in the lanes of Mykonos Town, from the melted-together chapels of Panagia Paraportiani to the boutiques of Matoyianni. End at the windmills and a waterfront bar in Little Venice for the island's signature sunset.

Day 2

Beach day on the south coast

Pick your vibe: glossy Psarou and Platis Gialos, the legendary party sands of Paradise and Super Paradise, or quiet, unorganised Agios Sostis. Ride the bus or a water taxi between coves and linger over a long seafood lunch.

Day 3

Delos & Ano Mera

Take the morning boat to Delos, the UNESCO-listed sacred island and one of antiquity's great cities, then return for the inland village of Ano Mera and its 16th-century Panagia Tourliani monastery.

Highlights

🏛️Landmark

The Windmills & Little Venice

The row of 16th-century windmills on the hill above town is Mykonos's postcard image, catching the same meltemi winds that once ground the island's grain. Just below, the fishing houses of Little Venice dangle over the sea — the front-row seat for sunset cocktails.

🏘️Neighbourhood

Chora & Matoyianni Street

The old town is a deliberately confusing tangle of whitewashed lanes, built to disorient raiding pirates and now lined with designer boutiques and hidden tavernas. Matoyianni is its buzzing main artery, alive with shoppers well past midnight.

🏛️Landmark

Panagia Paraportiani

Five chapels fused over two centuries into one sculptural, whitewashed mass, this is among the most photographed churches in Greece. Come at golden hour, when the curved walls glow against the blue of the Aegean.

Experience

Ancient Delos

A 30-minute boat ride away lies the UNESCO-listed birthplace of Apollo, an entire abandoned city of temples, mosaics and the famous marble lions. Bring water and a hat — there's almost no shade on the site.

🏖️Beach

The South-Coast Beaches

From glamorous Psarou and Platis Gialos to the party sands of Paradise and Super Paradise, the sheltered south coast has a beach for every mood. Escape the crowds at unorganised Agios Sostis, reachable only on foot.

🍽️Food

Cycladic Flavours

Mykonian tables revolve around peppery kopanisti cheese, sun-cured louza and just-caught seafood grilled over coals. Skip the celebrity venues and find a family taverna in Ano Mera for the real thing.

Neighbourhoods

Chora (Mykonos Town)

The island's beating heart, a whitewashed maze of boutiques, galleries and tavernas around Matoyianni Street. Base yourself here to walk everywhere, but expect noise and premium prices.

Little Venice & Kastro

The oldest quarter, where fishing houses hang their balconies straight over the waves. The waterfront bars are the classic sunset spot — arrive early to claim a table.

Ornos

A calm, family-friendly bay just south of town with a sandy beach and easy bus links. A good pick if you want swimming and restaurants without the party volume.

Platis Gialos & Psarou

The glossy south-coast beach strip, home to organised sunbeds and the Nammos beach-club scene. Water taxis fan out from here to the wilder beaches beyond.

Where to eat

Kopanisti

Mykonos's signature cheese — a sharp, peppery spread fermented to a spicy tang. Order it as a meze with a shot of ouzo and fresh bread.

Louza

Air-cured pork loin seasoned with savoury herbs and dried in the Cycladic sun, sliced paper-thin. It's the island's answer to prosciutto and a staple of any meze board.

Grilled seafood

Octopus hung to dry then charred over coals, plus whatever the day-boats bring in. Head to a harbour taverna in Ano Mera or the old port for the freshest catch.

Amygdalota

Soft, chewy almond macaroons dusted with sugar, the classic Mykonian sweet. Every bakery has its own version — pick some up for the ferry.

Good to know

Best time to visit

Late May to mid-June and September into October are the sweet spot — warm sea, long days and thinner crowds. July and August are peak: hottest, priciest and packed, with the famous meltemi wind whipping across the beaches. Winter is quiet, with many businesses closed.

Getting around

Chora is walkable and pedestrianised, so cars stay outside the centre. Frequent local buses link the town to the main beaches and Ano Mera, while water taxis hop between south-coast beaches in summer. Rent an ATV or car for flexibility, and catch the Delos boat from the old port.

  • Cash still rules at smaller tavernas and beach kiosks — carry euros.

  • Beach-club sunbeds get pricey fast — go early or pick an unorganised beach like Agios Sostis.
